BIG IDEA
Starting October 19, 2026, new drivers in B.C. no longer need a second road test to go from an N to a full licence. Instead, you earn it by keeping a safe driving record, which is checked in a Driving Record Assessment.

A few other things changed too. You now only need a parent's or guardian's permission to apply if you are under 18 (it used to be under 19). Drivers 25 and older get a shorter path. And immediate family members no longer count toward the N passenger limit. Here is the road to your licence for drivers under 25, one step at a time. If you’re 25 or older, some stages are shorter and some novice rules don’t apply, so check ICBC for your rules.
